Bioethics

Scientific research has brought advancements in many areas of life; it has improved medicine and treatments, and saved countless lives. However, some of this research raises serious concern over dangerous possibilities. Biological studies such as genetic engineering and cloning carry frightening implications. The wide scope of possibilities provided by this research raises different opinions and levels of concern from people with different morals and beliefs. Advancements in bioengineering open up questions about the right to both create and end life.

This directly relates to the moral Victor Frankenstein takes from his life story; people should not blindly follow ambitions and curiosity. Sometimes acquiring knowledge comes at too great a price; in these cases it should not be pursued. Some scientists pursue their ideas of advancement in a way that is eerily similar to Frankenstein’s obsession while creating his monster. Knowledge can be beneficial, but it can just as easily become dangerous. It should be handled with caution and wisdom, not chased after with selfish ambition. Science is advancing extremely quickly, and it is becoming difficult for ethical decisions to be made along with new discoveries. Instead of pursuing innovation by any means necessary, scientists, along with the rest of society, should contemplate and examine the process involved in reaching these breakthroughs.
